The Economite was a 1962 military prototype vehicle designed by G.L. Bowen & Co in Detroit, Michigan. It’s sole purpose was to replace the M274 “Mule” as the US military wanted to replace specialized vehicles with a broader fleet. With an aluminum body and wheels with grappling hooks, it’s presumed the Economite could be transported via aircraft into remote areas. A large cargo area could carry equipment for squad support.
Economite was tested by the US Army Transportation Board and US Army Tank-Automotive Command during 1962-1963. It did not receive a contract. Although partially disassembled, the Economite surives today. We’ve had the pleasure of visiting it in person.
